Rijksakademie Call for Entries
The Rijksakademie Residency in Amsterdam is an international research and production place for emerging, professional artists from
all continents. The Rijksakademie is more than a residency. It has extensive technical facilities, a library and an art collection.
In addition, the Rijksakademie offers basic facilities such as a studio, assistance by technical specialists, a work budget, and
mediation with accommodation and grants.

There are some fifty studios where resident artists work for one to two years on research, experiments, projects and production.
Confrontation with diverse cultures and advice by internationally active artists, curators and others, promote the deepening,
expansion and acceleration of artistic practice. A period at the Rijksakademie has the greatest effect on an artists' career,
three to five years of professional experience before applying.
Resident artists pursue every medium and technique: painting, drawing, graphics, photography, sculpture, video, film, sound and
digital media. Artists can also explore links with other areas, such as architecture, theatre, music, literature and science.
Application
Each year approximately twenty-five artists are invited for a residency. Artists can apply for a residency from January to December
2010 by using the online application form. The deadline for application is 1 February 2009.

Claudy Jongstra - Fashioning Felt

This exhibition will explore the varied new uses of felt-an ancient material, believed to be one of the earliest techniques
for making textiles. Made by matting together wool fibers with humidity and friction, felting requires little technological
expertise and is an extremely versatile material. The exhibition will begin with historic examples of felts, showcase innovations
in handmade felts, and feature contemporary uses of industrial felt in a range of fields, including product design, fashion,
architecture, and home furnishings. The exhibition is being organized by Susan Brown, assistant curator, Textiles.

This exhibition presents a series of discrete installations by Aernout Mik (Dutch, b. 1962), placed in both non-gallery
and gallery spaces throughout the Museum. Mik-whose work encompasses motion picture, sculpture, architecture, performance,
and social commentary-interrogates the nature of reality and subverts the traditional relationship between viewer and viewed.

The exhibition includes eight time-based works, including Mik's earliest 16mm film Fluff (1996), shown on television monitors
in several locations. A newly commissioned two-screen work is projected in the corridor facing the second-floor Special
Exhibition Galleries, where the six-screen Vacuum Room (2005) and the single-screen Training Ground (2006) are also on view.
Raw Footage (2006), Mik's only piece edited from actual newsreel documents, hangs in the Titus 1 Lobby Gallery, while the widescreen
Osmosis (2005) floats inside the Museum's main lobby near the Fifty-fourth Street entrance. The single-screen floor piece Middlemen
(2001) greets visitors in the main lobby near the Fifty-third Street entrance.

industrial ceramic production and the renaissance of ceramics in art and design today.

"Object Factory" illustrates how artists and designers in the 21st century are re-imagining the possibilities of this
most traditional of mediums through collaborations with industry that enhance and sometimes subvert the industrial process.
The exhibition also examines the unexpected uses of ceramics as kitchen appliances, knives, and even digital electronics,
made possible by new technologies.
Guest-curated by internationally recognized artist and designer Marek Cecula, with the assistance of Dagmara Kopola,
"Object Factory" features more than 200 objects from eighteen countries, including works Dutch designers Hella Jongerius
and Jurgen Bey, among others. Manufacturers represented in the exhibition include Bernardaud, Nymphenburg, Rosenthal, and
Royal Tichelaar Makkum.
Added Chief Curator David Revere McFadden, "By transforming the visual and cultural significance of ceramics, the designers
and artists presented in "Object Factory" challenge our traditional expectations of the medium and underscore its virtually
limitless potential."
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum will organize artist demonstrations in its Open Studios; workshops, lectures
and artist panels, readings, screenings, studio visits, and programs for children and families. Many programs available

Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher comprises three of the Dutch jazz scene's most idiosyncratic musicians, for whom
freedom and adventure are essential values. They all play an absolutely equal role in the music, which can
go in any which way, depending on decisions made on the spot. The long musical friendship (since 1989)
results in intuitive playing of the highest order. Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher shines in short powerful pieces,
honoring the jazz tradition by pushing it ahead with consummate, dazzling skill. The trio combines a playful
incorporation and expansion of older forms with a great adventurousness.

This is a three-evening symposium on June 9, 10, and 11 that gathers prominent, cross-sector speakers from diverse
disciplines and the Muslim diaspora to share country-specific perspectives on Muslim communities' integration in
European society.

In five events, ISLAM IN EUROPE sets the context for and explores multiple perspectives for viewing relations between
European societies and their Muslim communities. Participants will examine how different European nations and the Muslim
diasporas within their borders consider immediate local issues, as well as look at the development of a Europe-wide
discourse. The program also offers opportunities to bring American voices into this dialogue and is aimed at identifying
opportunities for cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.
Through scholarly debate, the related voices of participants of ISLAM IN EUROPE will articulate new perspectives offering
insight into the ideas that shape policy and thought.
Among the speakers will be Dutch writer and journalist for the NRC (Dutch newspaper) Bas Heijne. He will be participating in Part V on June 11.
