Commanding officer HNLMS Tromp


In 1956, Jankees Trimpe Burger was born in Rotterdam. In 1974, he graduated from High School in Nijmegen. In 1977, he received, on passing out from the Royal Netherlands Naval College (KIM) in Den Helder, his commission as Sub-Lieutenant.

Much of Jankees Trimpe Burger's career has been spent on Dutch submarines. Exceptions are a nine month period as Principal Warfare Officer (Underwater) in the Ops Room of the frigate HNLMS van Kinsbergen, in 1983, and a two year appointment to the British Submarine Service, in 1987/1988, when he also successfully completed the British Submarine Command Course (SMCC) known as "Perisher".

Jankees Trimpe Burger was captain of the old triple-hull submarine HNLMS Tonijn from December 1988 until July 1990. From April 1991 until September 1992 he commanded the state of the art Walrus class submarine HNLMS Zeeleeuw.

In 1994 he completed the Long Staff Course at the Netherlands Joint Staff College (the IDL) followed by a short tour of six months, as the Executive Officer of the Standard class (S) frigate HNLMS Abraham Crijnsen, patrolling in the Adriatic Sea during the United Nations Operation Sharp Guard.

From August 1995 until February 1997 he was Head of Operations for the Dutch Submarine Service. He then became commanding officer of the Multipurpose class (M) frigate HNLMS Willem van der Zaan until October 1997 when he was appointed to the Ministry of Defence in The Hague. On the Defence Staff he worked in the International Affairs Department specialising in the Western European Union (WEU) and the European Union (EU). From July 1999 until August 2000 he was Head of Operational Training at the Belgian-Netherlands Operational School in Den Helder.

From August 2000 until July 2001 he commanded the (M) frigate HNLMS Karel Doorman during which period he operated 3 months in the Nato Standing Naval Force Mediterranean.

On 29 October 2001, Commander Trimpe Burger was appointed to the staff of Admiral Netherlands Fleet as Head of Personnel and promoted to captain.

On 19 October 2004, Captain Trimpe Burger took command of HNLMS Tromp, an Air Defence and Command and Control frigate, the second ship of the Zeven Provinciën Class.

Jankees Trimpe Burger is married and has 3 children. His hobbies are gardening, DIY, watching film, listening to music and reading.
